Tretyakov Gallery opened an exhibition of the great collector George Costakis – Vedomosti

George Costakis known to all who are interested in Russian art. You could even say that it is popular because of its unique destiny no less than his collection, and many times became the subject for publications and broadcasts. Including about absurd horrors of Soviet life that await Born in the USSR with the mind, talent and love for art. Yet we can say that Costacis ?? legend, history and stories as he finds paintings that adorn the walls of the museum now ( in the closet, under the bed, as a patch on fence), have become folklore. In general, for an exhibition in the Tretyakov feel prepared.

But she is stunning. Although you know of any things and what artists held a meeting Costacis, but seeing them together, still amazed ?? as one person could not simply collect and return from oblivion so many masterpieces and simply wonderful works great, outstanding and ordinary Russian artists of the twentieth century. And not only because of, but in spite of life circumstances. Thanks because Muscovite Costacis had a Greek passport and working in foreign embassies ( driver, then assistant manager) receive monetary wages t. e. was not poor. Contrary, because the Soviet authorities that he collected, not only considered art, but seen in the picture with colored stripes, squares and circles ideological contagion and enemies of the people. Oddly explains now hard to see why.

At the center of the main hall of the exhibition titled « Favorites “as on the board of special honor, exhibited a bright, illuminating color « Picturesque architectonics “Liubov Popova, perfect equilibrium composition « Suprematism” Ilya Chashnik overloaded geometry and significance of « Portrait MV Matyushina” Casimir Malevich, mystical « First Shostakovich’s Symphony “by Pavel Filonov. All ?? pride meeting Russian avant-garde, the most popular in the museum world of the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery. According to museum director Irina Lebedeva, half of Russian avant-garde works by artists that are stored in the museum ?? Costacis gift.

Over and around « iconostasis” not too well, and as always planned exhibition? ? PEOPLE. Biggest ?? from Liubov Popova, practically its retrospective. Many works Klyuna known Suprematist and unexpectedly picturesque naive « Self Portrait” and « portrait of his wife.” Great early Wassily Kandinsky. Tatlin and Rodchenko. Sad neighborhood figurative macabre « Rebellion” Clement Red’ko with his own energetic Suprematist compositions. Wonderful work of artists of the second row, a number of artists unexpected things first.

Next to the widely cited works, like sentimental « lily of the valley “by Marc Chagall, ?? Rare and hard to identifiable. Their origin could be doubted, if not to know that almost all Costacis bought almost firsthand ?? relatives and friends of the artists, or they themselves, as happened with Alexander Rodchenko. For example, cutesy, not kostakievskogo taste « Cafe « Pittoresk “George Yakulov was purchased from Alice UNC.

Small full exhibition would be obtained from the collections of icons and folk toys. And they were donated Costacis state. And they treated him with suspicion, to his gift ?? with caution.

The text in the exhibition catalog, a serious publication with a large list of works, including those held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki ( got there Costacis part of the collection, which he was allowed to take out of the USSR), destroy the conventional wisdom that the state forced to leave the best part of the collector assembly. According to the daughter Aliki Costacis « forced to leave, but did not give.” Understanding the importance of Russian and world culture collected, Costacis repeatedly tried to give his invaluable ( in the material sense) and priceless ( in the feature) collection of the future museum of modern art. And when it was section of the collection, in 1977, specifically left the most valuable to the state.

And it is occupied by their ideological games and propaganda nor collectors nor he collected art is not appreciated. And, as usual, was mistaken in his vision of the true values.

The exhibition is open until February 8
