Cairo, 11 July 2015, 08:51 – REGNUM Omar Sharif (real name Michel Demitri Shalhub) was born in Alexandria (Egypt) April 10, 1932, in the Melkite Catholic family from Lebanon. His father, a Lebanese immigrant Shalhub Yousef, was a merchant forest, and his mother, Clara Shalhub was the Lebanese-Syrian origin. Later, Sharif became a Muslim in order to marry Egyptian actress Faten Hamama.
The future actor graduated from Victoria College in Alexandria and then Cairo University with a degree in mathematics and physics. After studying with his father Sharif engaged timber trade. But tangible success in this field has not achieved.
In 1954, he began his career as an actor, playing his first role in the Egyptian film “Heaven Hell”. Then he appeared in other Egyptian films.
His first English-language film – “Lawrence of Arabia”, in which he played the role of vizier Ali. This role earned him a nomination for the “Oscar” for Best Supporting Actor and international fame. In 1964, he played the role of the king in the peplum Soham Armenia Anthony Mann’s “The Fall of the Roman Empire.” In 1965 he starred in the movie “Doctor Zhivago” by Boris Pasternak’s novel, as well as colorful role of Genghis Khan in the eponymous film by Henry Levin. In 1968 he played the role of Crown Prince Rudolf in the romantic drama Terence Young “Mayerling”. In 1969 – the role of the gangster John in western Colorado “Mackenna’s Gold.” In 1973 – the role of Captain Nemo in the miniseries Juan Antonio Bardem, “The Mysterious Island of Captain Nemo.” In 1983 he played a role in the television series Code Dada “Far tents.” Just a filmography of more than 100 paintings Sharif.
Sharif was married once Egyptian actress Faten Hamama. They had a son Tareq. In 1965, Tarek starred with his father in the film “Doctor Zhivago.” Sharif and divorced Hamama in 1974, the actor never been married.
