«The painting was stolen in one weekend in September 2005. Taking advantage of the absence of an employee of the museum and the security alarm system, the two men removed the picture from the frame and replaced it with a laminated color photocopy of the art album “- says the museum’s director Natalia Bendyukova.

After a year in St. Petersburg anonymous phone call picture Polenova found in one package with two stolen from the Hermitage statues. The thieves were detained in Kirovograd region of Ukraine and, as it turned out on the court, committed numerous thefts from museums in Ukraine and Poland.

«The trial took place in Odessa and lasted until 2013. But after examination of the authenticity of the picture, its return has been hampered by the fact that the painting was found on the territory of another state, “- said the director of the museum.

After the return of the Crimea and Sevastopol to the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Culture has taken an active participate in the return of the painting to the museum. Museum staff also thank the Russian Museum for the rapid holding of scientific – technological expertise of the pattern, the authorship Polenova.

The painting “Monastery on the river” written Russian painter Vasily Polenov in 1898. Material – canvas technique – oil, size 24 × 40 cm. The painting depicts Caves Monastery near Nizhny Novgorod.
