MOSCOW, January 12 – RIA Novosti. The Administration of the Governor of Istanbul reported 10 dead and 15 injured in an explosion at Sultanahmet Square in the historic center of the city on Tuesday.

A powerful bomb exploded early Tuesday near Sultanahmet Square next to the tram stop at the moment when there was a group of tourists. The area is cordoned off by police experts arrived explosive ordnance disposal. The cause of the explosion has not yet officially named. According to police, the explosion could be carried out by a suicide bomber.
“With the explosion in the area of Sultanahmet 10 people were killed, 15 injured. Currently being studied type of explosive device,” – said in a statement the administration.
Sultanahmet – the most popular tourist area in the old part of Istanbul, located on the European side of the city on a promontory between the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus Strait and the Sea of Marmara. The name comes from the eponymous region Sultanahmet Mosque, known to tourists as the Blue Mosque, located on the square in the center of the district. The historical part of the area is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
