Film of the week: “Brooklyn» – www.elle.ru

The choice of ELLE – “Brooklyn”, nominated for three “Oscar” outstanding melodrama about emigration and general elections as well as another premiere, the most promising trailer and the actual recommendation of the week

Born and raised in the small. Irish town, young Eylish (Saoirse Ronan) arrives in postwar Brooklyn, where thousands have already managed to settle her countrymen who go to Irish dancing and Irish priest, but of homesickness still unbearable. Everything changes when Eylish charms gallant Italian plumber (Emory Cohen), and finally confused when the Irish come the bad news.

For the author, famous for a very masculine books about music ( «Hi-Fi»), football ( “soccer fever”) and infantilism ( “About a Boy”), Englishman Nick Hornby makes a phenomenal success in the script essay about seeking – and finding – a woman. Oscar nominations earned by Carey Mulligan ( “An Education”), Reese Witherspoon ( “Wild”), and now, and Saoirse Ronan ( “Brooklyn”), not to mention the Hornby (two), will not lie – if to someone the necessary adaptation of the novel about the hard fate of the female, it is better to call Nick

the more so that the script “Brooklyn.” – it is perhaps the strongest link. Working with an interesting, but not particularly original material from which in other hands (hello, Tom Hooper!) Would have been melodramatic mess, Hornby and directed by John Crowley ( “Boy A”) does not occur in any of the genre traps, capturing the elusive beauty and finding a deep content of the conflict, which seems to be trivial to not find: a crane or a titmouse, desire or duty, stability or freedom, and so on.

Beautiful, intelligent and subtle, “Brooklyn” and constantly saluted formal perfection: the artists worked for five-plus, symmetry other staff would be envied by Wes Anderson, a tablecloth in a cafe pretending to the American flag, but what the main visual effect – this, of course, the dazzling blue eyes Saoirse Ronan. The girl from “Atonement” is ripe, prettier, and grew up in a rather ambitious actress – Charge the screen, even in the presence of the masters of the profession such as Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters

Facing the heroine Ronan selection illustrates, among other things, and actors playing it. boyfriends Domhnall Gleeson and Emory Cohen. While ubiquitous Gleason Jr. (whose four films have earned at the end of last year, 22 Oscar nominations) keeps himself in the hands of a little-known Cohen ( “The Place Beyond the Pines”) includes this James Dean, that sometimes even embarrassing. But in some places – and such places in the “Brooklyn” is not an example more – their duet with Saoirse does not come off, but from the stories told by their hard not to slobber 9/10
