About a thousand people gathered today at the rally “For creative freedom” in the center of Novosibirsk. There came the supporters of the opera “Tannhauser” and dismissed Boris Mezdricha. March 10 Magistrate’s Court refused to bring them to administrative responsibility for offending the feelings of believers, not finding the offense. The Prosecutor’s Office appealed these decisions at first, but then withdrew their protests. Nevertheless, March 29 Mezdrich by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation was dismissed from his post as director of the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre. His place was taken by the head of the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Vladimir Kehman. He decided to take the opera “Tannhauser” from the repertoire and focus on classic productions. The scandal surrounding the “Tannhauser” in Russian society has caused a wave of controversy about censorship.
