Sevastopol against the “Stalingrad” – BBC

In the box of the Russian-Ukrainian “The Battle of Sevastopol ‘- kitsch patriotic blockbuster, trying to repeat the success of” Stalingrad “by Fyodor Bondarchuk.

Kiev, the end of 30 -s of the last century. Frowning student of the history department at KSU Taras Shevchenko Lyudmila Pavlichenko (Julia Peresild) comes to shooting with friends and a condescending hooting heap puts shots in the bull’s-eye. Vigilant instructor tells where necessary, and Woman rush courses best shot. The war caught her graduate student, but the decision for her daughter NKVD officer Paulichenka obvious – she went as a volunteer to the front and becomes the label female sniper in history – with three hundred fascists counts. In 1942, after being wounded and contusions have lost several loved ones, Paulichenka sent to the United States, is campaigning for the opening of the Second Front, urging Americans to stop hiding behind her and friendship with US First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

«The Battle of Sevastopol” – the latter probably a movie filmed together Russian and Ukrainian filmmakers. Filming began two years ago, and ended production in the limited entry of Russians on the territory of Ukraine.

However, the film has been completed and is now released in rent in both countries – though in Ukraine “The Battle of Sevastopol” has become a “Nezlamnu” (“Enduring”) that even more accurately reflects the idea of painting . Moreover, in the course of viewing “militant” and the name does seem almost gimmicky – defense of Sevastopol is devoted quite a bit of time near the end, and this episode is not a key.

Director Sergei Mokritsky said that his task was not staged another military blockbuster, and “psychological biopic about the woman on the war.” Both terms (Women and war) in the film is really there, and here the biography complicated. In fact, it was all a bit wrong. Paulichenka – surname of her first husband nee Ludmila Belova, which is already in 1932 (before the events described in the film), she bore a son Rostislav. The heroine of the film, in turn, goes to war almost yesterday schoolgirl with pigtails, and love meets already at the front. In addition, in the film there is a scene in which is awarded to Lyudmila personal rifle officer recognizes her daughter Paulichenka, with whom he fought in the Civil – which, of course, too, could not possibly be.

On these and many other mistakes, in general, could close my eyes: in the end, “The Battle of Sevastopol” – it’s not a documentary and a feature film, and creation myths – one of the natural functions of cinema.

That’s just not a myth, no more or less written out though and fictional biography in the film. Heroine throws a study on the front, there – into the arms of the severe commander (a month later, we recall, at the box office “The Dawns Here Are Quiet”), then in bed with a partner (played by Yevgeny Tsyganov), then – the home of Mrs. Roosevelt, and all these events, she meets with an equally intense expression, implying apparently special integrity of the individual. The authors of the paintings so take liberties with chronology, that the relationship between episodes sometimes is extremely difficult.

This, however, is explained quite traditional: “The Battle of Sevastopol” – squeeze out four-part film, which will be shown on television after the rental.

The main trump card “Battle of Sevastopol”, despite assurances by the authors in psychologism, was to be visual ingenuity – it was clear even after the release of the trailer. But here in the picture serious problems. Having built several large-scale scenes, “Battle” is pierced in the details. Too “drawn” planes, too plastic wax hand and, finally, a German sniper with a Hitler mustache, completely depriving the viewer the possibility of at least a little believe it. One gets the feeling that the picture was not the task of the story of the unjustly forgotten heroine of the Great Patriotic War, and the competition with the “Stalingrad”. Came out and most “fashionable” than a realistic picture, and a female cover of the band’s song “Cinema” on the soundtrack (in the “Stalingrad” Zemfira sang “Legend”, here – previously outswing Zemfira “Cuckoo” sings Polina Gagarin), and the general thrust compete with Hollywood blockbusters.

Another thing is that the efforts of the creators of “Battle of Sevastopol”, appear to be lost in vain.

More recently, did not justify rolling expectations “Batalon” and “Battle of Sevastopol”, apparently, do not expect record numbers “Stalingrad”. And there are two very simple explanation. First, for those who like war films are not too reliable “patriotic action” has no interest. And secondly, to look at what war is now more simply turn on the TV.
