After some catastrophe the world is divided into municipalities, which provide a ” sameness. ” There is no ambition and glory – hence, there is no jealousy. Here nine years give each bike, teenagers receive a service life distribution, and old at the time “was removed to another place.” Here are asked to use only the correct word (“Do you love me?” And “You are my content?”), To observe a curfew and not to touch the people outside of the family unit, and the rest – is not life, but a fairy tale. Which collapses when Jonas is assigned to “take the memories” and Giver shows him what snow and sleigh.

Of course, anyone would compare this film with a yield of recently “divergents” – though the list of such pictures can be easily extended: dystopia in vogue. Teenagers often skip class, and therefore deprived of not to memories, and sometimes basic knowledge, or now and can not explain the nature of things, do not tell some basic truths about the world. Not long after, and before that, following the characters in the film (the film adaptation of the popular book of the ocean), they will be called elephant behemoth – black or white. Not understanding, not knowing that the memory not only stores the echoes of the distant past, but also gives the opportunity to influence their own future.

Put on “Initiate” Phillip Noyce – director known but extremely uneven. Behind him there were already almost classic “Patriot Games” and absolutely outstanding “rabbit hutch”, but at the same time – was a thrash “Holy” and “Salt.” Caught in the “intelligent and extremely topical stories for teens,” he teeters on the edge, constantly risking falling into something absolutely ugly, but in time stretching and continuing to move forward is not a jerk, and on tiptoe. Only with such temporitme energy disappears completely – and “spectacular” film just will not name.

However, Noyce in store, there are two clues, getting him for one and a half hours. Firstly, first-class veterans – Jeff Bridges, for which it is generally a personal project, and Meryl Streep, who rarely agrees to such almost cameo roles. And secondly, interesting work with color (suggested by, perhaps, a literary source). The fact that almost the whole picture – black and white, So is this world – intentionally devoid of colors. Colors appear gradually, but with the awakening of the hero: like conceptualism deserves respect, if only because that is clearly atypical for a Hollywood movie with a 50-million budget.

Nevertheless, as a full-fledged drama tape does not work, and morality, elder pronounces sounds though not from scratch, but obviously in a low voice: “If you give people the freedom of choice, they choose the wrong thing. And so every time. ” Probably Noyce should be bolder – and give sending not only to all the distinguished Nelson Mandela (his Giver shows Jonas to give the boy the courage to escape), but also to those modern politicians whose activities are always of fierce debate. And because teenagers can not understand who exactly is meant here.
