MOSCOW, December 14 — RIA Novosti. District court of Amsterdam ruled that the collection of Scythian gold, brought from the Crimean museums should be returned to Kiev.

the Russian side said that the court’s decision is contrary to the provisions of the contract, the principles of cooperation between museums and norms of international law, and has already expressed his intention to appeal.

the controversy surrounding the collection

the Collection of Scythian gold was removed from the Crimean museums on exhibition in archaeological Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam in early February 2014, before the Crimea reunited with Russia. After long negotiations, the Crimean museums in court demanded that the Netherlands has complied with the obligations under the contracts and returned them to the exhibits.

Now in Amsterdam are artifacts from four museums in Crimea. Total collection of about two thousand artifacts, including not having analogues in the world. Exhibits of the Kiev Museum, which were also presented at the exhibition, the Dutch side in September returned to Ukraine.

Decision in favor of Ukraine

the proceedings in court took place in October, but, in accordance with local legislation, the announcement of the verdict took place just this Wednesday.

When making a decision the court was guided by the fact that Crimea is not a country and cannot claim the right to objects of art. Thus, the Ukrainian court will have to determine where to return the artifacts after they will be on the territory of Ukraine.

the decision of the court of Amsterdam will enter into force only as long as the consideration of the appeal. The representatives of the museums already announced that it will contest the verdict.

the Ministry of culture said that the decision of the district court of Amsterdam is a very negative precedent, violate the principles of inter-Museum exchange and norms of international law, including the right of the people of Crimea to have access to their own cultural heritage. The Ministry noted that the court ignored the principle of conservation of archaeological finds related to the history and culture of the area where they occur.

“the objects should return to the Crimea, where he was discovered and where were stored for decades and studied by archaeologists,” — said the Ministry.

In turn, Minister of culture of Crimea Arina nowosielski said that the court’s decision is a political one and contrary to morality and professional ethics in the relationship between Museum institutions in the world.

According to the head of the Public chamber Grigory Ioffe, the Amsterdam court discredited itself, and a verdict of “shield with white thread”. A state Duma Deputy from the Crimea Ruslan Balbec said that therefore the Dutch judge “is actually legalized theft.”

At the same time a member of the government of the Republic of Zaur Smirnov does not exclude that in case of transfer of Ukraine a unique collection of gold may be lost forever.

“it is likely that it will fall either into the hands of some politicians, in the form of a gift for a birthday, or in the hands of private collectors, by selling through corruption schemes”, — he said.
