Van Gogh painting sold at Sotheby’s for 66.3 million dollars – BFM.Ru

The canvas depicts an alley located in the Roman necropolis in Arles Alyscamps

The picture of the Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh’s “Alyscamps» (Les Alyscamps, 1888) sold in New York for 66 3-00 million of thousands of dollars at auction, organized by auction house Sotheby’s, Tass reported.

This autumn landscape was created by Van Gogh in the French city of Arles during the two-month period of work side by side with Paul Gauguin. On the canvas depicts an alley located in Arles Roman necropolis of Alyscamps. The estimated cost of the work amounted to 40 million dollars.

«The fact that the auction exhibited painting of Arles, created by this artist, largely self-trained in painting, at the peak of his creative activity makes these unique bid,” – said Virginia Commonwealth University Professor Clifford Edwards. He – an expert on the works of Van Gogh.

The most expensive of the auctioned paintings by this artist considered the painting “Portrait of Doctor Gachet» (Portrait du Dr Gachet avec branche de digitale, 1890). It bought in 1990 in New York Christie’s auction for 82.5 million dollars.
