UNESCO may prohibit the installation of Prince Vladimir, near the Kremlin – Radio Liberty

September 9 decision to install a monument in the square took Borovitskaya Moscow City Duma. The complex of the Kremlin and Red Square is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List

The World Heritage Centre will check the installation of the monument to Prince Vladimir in the center of Moscow – on Borovitskaya area.

As the “News” executive secretary of the Commission for UNESCO Grigory Ordzhonikidze, experts must assess the possible negative impact on the surrounding views of the monument in a protected area near the Kremlin. The complex of the Kremlin and Red Square is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.

9 September decision to install a monument in the square took Borovitskaya Moscow City Duma. Earlier Borovitskaya Victory Square on the results of the online voting site selection for the monument. For this option during the interview on the website of the Russian military-historical society voted 62 percent of users.

All-Russian Society for Protection of Monuments of History and Culture, Public Movement “Arhnadzor” and a number of Russian architects are against this option. In their view, the monument violates the historic urban landscape of the center of Moscow.

The original monument was planned to install on the Sparrow Hills. However, this decision caused a wide public outcry and mass protests. The authorities decided to move the location of the monument.
