Opera star Montserrat Caballe has received six months suspended prison sentence – BBC Russian

The Court of Barcelona has sentenced a world-renowned opera star Montserrat Caballe to a suspended six-month prison term and a fine of more than 250 thousand. euros for tax evasion.

The singer was allowed to participate in the proceedings via video from his home – 82-year-old Caballe suffered a stroke in 2012.

Previously, she struck a deal with prosecutors, and on Tuesday the judge has confirmed the legality of pre-trial agreement.

The judge also ordered to pay more than Caballe 72 th. euros to the tax authorities in a variety of costs.

Investigation of Montserrat Caballe began in 2014. According to investigators, who lives in Barcelona, ​​the singer received the proceeds of concerts abroad through a company registered in Andorra, and thus she was able to hide from the tax of about half a billion euros. Caballe has recognized the validity of the tax claim.

Caballe famous roles in the execution of the classic Italian operas. During her singing career, she performed almost 90 roles and about 800 chamber works.
