MURMANSK, October 2 – RIA Novosti. Monument cod inaugurated on Friday in the capital of the Arctic, said the administration of Murmansk.

Murmansk – one of the largest Russian port, and cod which is produced from the North Sea – one of the most popular locals fish species. The idea to establish a monument to the main northern fish appeared in 2014, on the eve of 99th anniversary of the city, which will be celebrated on October 4 the sculpture was inaugurated in the updated park on the main square “Five Corners”.

The residents of Murmansk prepared more 20 sketches the future of the architectural composition. Specialists of the municipal enterprise “Murmansk city parks and squares,” selected the best works and on that basis developed the project.

“During the war, cod saved more than one human life, becoming the basis of the diet of military Murmansk”, – said the representative of city authorities at the opening of the monument.

The monument is a sculpture installed in the northern stone. “The size of a fish corresponds to the natural: weight – 32 kilograms, length – 1 meter 20 centimeters. This work Murmansk masters” – said the mayor’s office.
