UNESCO confirmed the destruction of the ancient theatre of Palmyra – Komsomolskaya Pravda

UNESCO confirmed receipt of the messages and satellite images confirming the destruction of tetrapilon and part of the proscenium of the ancient theatre of the Syrian Palmyra.

“These wilful destruction is a new war crime and a great loss for the Syrian people and all humanity,” said UNESCO Director-General Irina UNESCO.

She identified the perpetrators as militant extremists, refraining from clear definitions of barbarians belonging to one or another terrorist group, adding, however, that “cultural cleansing by violent extremists seek to destroy human life, and historical monuments in order to deprive the Syrian people of the past and the future.”

Palmyra was included in the world heritage List of UNESCO in 1980, with 2013 included in the List of world heritage in danger.
